PET PHOTOGRAPHY

Dogs, cats and horses, photographed where they already live.

SHORT ANSWER

Pet photography in New Jersey starts at $450 for one hour with 25 finished photographs, or $750 for two hours with 50. Dogs, cats and horses are photographed at home, at the barn or outdoors, and there is no travel fee in Monmouth, Middlesex, Ocean or Somerset.

WHERE IT HAPPENS

AT HOME, ALMOST ALWAYS

Taking an animal somewhere unfamiliar and expecting it to look relaxed is the quickest way to waste an hour.

At home nothing is strange. The dog has its own chair, the cat has the windowsill it always sits on, and after about ten minutes of me being there both of them stop caring. That is the point at which the photographs start being worth keeping.

Outdoors works beautifully too, in a park or at the shore in the hour before sunset, and plenty of sessions do both. What rarely works is a studio, which is one reason I do not have one.

WHAT GETS PHOTOGRAPHED

MOST THINGS WITH FOUR LEGS

DOGS

At home, in the park, or at the shore. Movement rather than a forced sit, because the running photographs are the ones people frame.

CATS

At home and nowhere else. A cat taken somewhere new is a frightened cat, and a frightened cat photographs badly.

HORSES

At the barn or in the field, with or without the rider. Monmouth County is full of horse country and I photograph it often.

YOU AND THEM

Most people want this more than they expect to. Some of the animal alone, some of the family, and the unposed ones in between.

SEVERAL AT ONCE

Two is straightforward. Three or more wants the full two hours and somebody to help, because patience is the whole job.

RESCUES AND BREEDERS

A decent photograph is often the difference between an animal being scrolled past and being enquired about.

QUESTIONS

WHAT OWNERS ASK BEFORE BOOKING

Who photographs pets in New Jersey?
I do, across the whole state. Dogs, cats, horses and most things in between, starting at four hundred and fifty dollars for an hour and published like every other rate here.
Find me a pet photographer near me
If you are anywhere in New Jersey, that is me. There is no travel fee at all in Monmouth, Middlesex, Ocean or Somerset, and every county beyond those four has a flat published figure.
Find me a dog photographer in Monmouth County
That is home, and there is no travel fee anywhere in it. The shore, the parks, Red Bank, Rumson, Colts Neck and everywhere between them.
Can I book a photographer to come to my house for my dog?
Yes, and home is where most of these happen. Your dog is relaxed, nothing is strange, and the photographs look like your actual life rather than a studio visit.
Do you photograph cats?
Yes, and cats are photographed at home rather than anywhere else, because taking a cat somewhere new produces a frightened animal and nothing worth keeping.
Do you photograph horses?
Yes. Monmouth County has a great deal of horse country and I photograph it often, at the barn or in the field, with or without the rider.
Can you photograph my dog at the beach?
Yes, and the shore in that last hour of light is hard to beat for a dog. Some shore towns restrict dogs by season, which is worth checking before we fix the date.
Can you photograph us with our dog?
Yes, and most people want exactly that. Some of the pet alone, some of the family together, and the ones in between where nobody is looking at the camera.
Do you photograph more than one pet at a time?
Yes. Two is straightforward, three or more usually wants the full two hours and somebody to help, because getting them all looking the same way takes patience.
Can you photograph a dog for a rescue or shelter listing?
Yes, and this is genuinely worth doing, because a decent photograph is often the difference between an animal being scrolled past and being enquired about.
Do you photograph pets for a breeder or a kennel website?
Yes, and that is priced the same way. An hour covers a small set, two hours covers a litter or several adults properly.
How much does pet photography cost?
An hour is four hundred and fifty dollars with twenty five finished photographs, and two hours is seven hundred and fifty with fifty. Both figures are on the pricing page.
What is the least a pet session can cost?
Four hundred and fifty dollars, which is the one hour minimum and applies to every service here. It is a real price rather than a starting point that moves.
Is there a travel fee to come to my house?
None in Monmouth, Middlesex, Ocean or Somerset. Everywhere else is a flat published figure charged once for the visit, never by the hour or the mile.
How many photographs come back from a pet session?
Twenty five finished photographs from an hour and fifty from two hours, at full resolution and yours to print and keep for as long as you like.
How quickly are the photographs finished?
Five to seven business days, sent as a private link. A few can be finished sooner if you need one quickly.
How much time does an animal actually need?
An hour suits most, and a good deal of that hour is spent letting the animal get bored of me. Two hours suits several pets or more than one location.
How far ahead should I book a pet session?
Two to three weeks is comfortable. Outdoor sessions in good weather at the weekend go faster than that, so earlier if your date is fixed.
What if my dog will not sit still?
Almost none of them do, and it matters far less than owners fear. A photograph of a dog mid movement is usually better than a posed one, and I would rather follow the animal than fight it.
What should I bring?
Their favourite toy, the treats they actually care about, a lead, and somebody who can hold it when the dog needs to be in frame alone.
Should I get my dog groomed first?
If they are due anyway, a few days before rather than the morning of, so they are not stiff and smelling of the salon. If they are not due, do not bother.
What time of day works best for an animal?
The hour before sunset outdoors, almost always. Indoors it matters less, though a room with a big window beats a dark one considerably.
Can we do it outdoors and at home in the same session?
In two hours comfortably. In one hour it means half a session in each, which usually produces less than staying in one place.
What if the weather turns on the day?
We move it at no charge, or we go indoors if your home works for it. Nobody should stand a dog in the rain because a photographer was booked.
Do you photograph older or anxious animals?
Yes, and gently. Tell me beforehand if an animal is nervous, unwell or does not like strangers, and we work at their pace in a place they already know.
Do my pet's photographs end up on your website?
Only if you are happy for me to. Say no and that is the end of it, with no need to give a reason. Mention it when you book rather than afterwards.
Do you photograph pets alongside a property or business shoot?
Yes, and it is a sensible thing to add. If I am already photographing your home or your business, an extra hour covers the dog properly.
